After creating a surface of plaster and gesso on the wallboard, either graphite or wax is layered on. The darker side of each piece in the series is heavily layered graphite. Graphite has a quality of being able to be worked in many ways to reflect varying qualities across the surface of the piece. I sand, scrape or burnish the plaster which creates a differential surface across the expanse of the board.
This changing surface dictates how the graphite lies and therefore reflects or absorbs light, which can either hide or reveal an image. The light colored side of the two-part pieces is beeswax and hard waxes manipulated at different temperatures. Depth, luminosity and iridescence can all be created with heat and by working the surface.
